Michael Coleman was recently named a semi-finalist for the 2020 American Prize in the Instrumental Chamber Music category for his “String Quartet No. 1”. The American Prize is an annual national competition which features several composition and performance categories. Administered by Hat City Music Theater, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Danbury, Connecticut, The American Prize was founded in 2009. The competitions of The American Prize are open to all U.S. citizens, whether living in this country or abroad, and to others currently living, working and/or studying in the United States of America, its protectorates and territories. Dr. Coleman’s “String Quartet No. 1” will also be released on an upcoming CD by the Amernet String Quartet titled “The Alabama String Quartet Collection” which features works by members of the Birmingham Art Music Alliance and will be released on the MSR Classics label. Praised for their “intelligence” and “immensely satisfying” playing by The New York Times, the Amernet String Quartet has garnered recognition as one of today’s exceptional string quartets and are Ensemble-in-Residence at Florida International University in Miami.
