Pensacola ComposerFest XVIII set for Sept. 24

Enjoy the original music of mostly local composers at Pensacola ComposerFest XVIII set for 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 24, at Pensacola State College’s Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium, Building 8, on the Pensacola campus. The free event is open to the public and provides an opportunity to hear various new music written by contemporary composers – many of whom will attend. Eight of the 13 compositions in the concert will be world premieres.

9 Pensacola State performing arts students selected to 2022-2023 FCSAA All-Academic Team

Nine Pensacola State College performing arts students have been named to the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) 2022-2023 All-Academic Team. Ezra Baker, Tabari Daniels-Butcher, Haileigh Furlong, Sienna Hudak, Daelan Moreland, Owen Raley, Tristen Rodriguez,  Hudson Laws Savage and Francisco Segovia were honored for academic excellence, leadership and community service. To be selected for the All-Academic Team, students must have at least a 3.30-grade point average and have earned at least 18 credit hours. Dr. Kenneth Phillips, head of the College’s Performing Arts Department, was proud of the students.

Pensacola State’s ‘Little Women’ production receives FCSAA Superior Rating

Pensacola State College’s theater production of Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women” received a Superior rating from the Florida College System Activities Association – Theatre Division. Raines Carr, theater director at Chipola College, was the adjudicator. Carr also recognized individual performers ─ Jolene Cintron, who played Jo March, Harley Furlong as Amy March, and Jac Campo as Parrot and the Hideous Man 1. Carr also applauded PSC’s Technical Director Lance Bannon’s scene design.

Lyceum ends musical season with performances by Motel Radio, Kahlo Quartet, PSC’s Wind & Jazz Ensembles

The last three musical performances of the Spring 2023 Pensacola State College Lyceum series are this month. New Orleans-based indie rock band Motel Radio will perform on Wednesday, April 19, while Kahlo Quartet, a Philadelphia-based chamber music group that mixes traditional classical music with Latin American influences, will perform on Thursday, April 20.

Pensacola State saxophonist Pierre Baldwin wins first place in Jazz Pensacola student competition

You practice to get better. And if results mean anything, and they do, moving from second place to first is a sure sign of improvement and achievement. Pierre Baldwin practices his saxophone a lot. The PSC Marine Biology student won first place in the Jazz Pensacola Student Jazz Competition’s Collegiate Instrumental category, besting five University of West Florida students.

PSC Adjunct Professor Benjamin Rollings receives Steinway Piano Award

Benjamin Rollings was a talented and accomplished piano student, earning scholarships and graduation distinctions throughout his musical studies, which began at age 6. As a teacher, Rollings is just as accomplished. Rollings is a Pensacola State College adjunct music instructor and staff accompanist. On March 10, he was presented a Top Piano Teacher Award from Steinway & Sons, the prestigious piano company.

Pensacola Guitar Orchestra to hold 40th Anniversary Spring Recital on April 1

Pensacola State College will present the Pensacola Guitar Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Joe Stallings, in its 40th Anniversary Spring Recital on Saturday, April 1. The recital is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium. Admission is free. The recital will feature the nine-member guitar orchestra and soloists from Pensacola State College, the University of West Florida, and recent prize winners of state and regional competitions.

Three talented musicians captured the top prizes at the Pensacola State College 2023 Finger Style Acoustic Guitar Competition held Feb. 18 in Pensacola State College’s Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium.
